The Motorship Peckinpaugh

The motorship Peckinpaugh was the first commercial boat built to use the early twentieth century Barge Canal.

The boat was constructed to take advantage of the larger locks of the new canal, which had been designed primarily as a commercial canal for large-capacity barge traffic. This historic photograph demonstrates how the vessel fit almost exactly the lock chamber interior.

Her last voyage was in 1994, as seen in the photograph below, one year after the crew of "Discovery" witnessed her passage into Oneida Lake at Sylvan Beach.

In some ways, this vessel represents the end of a tradition that the batteaux which traversed these waterways 200 years ago started.
